Newborn photography sessions are magical moments, and to make the photos even more unique, your baby should be calm and relaxed. Many parents worry that their baby will be restless or cry during the session, but with a few precautions and tips, it is possible to create a calm environment. Here, we share some valuable tips that we put into practice to ensure that your baby feels safe and comfortable during the newborn session.
It is important to know:
- Patience is key! Breaks for feeding and diaper changes are natural and part of the process.
- Understand that each baby has their own rhythm.
In newborn sessions, an essential part of calming the baby begins with preparation. Elements such as room temperature, lighting, and having few visual stimuli in the session space are actions that help the baby stay calm.
Feeding the baby before the session
One of the best ways to ensure that your baby is calm during the session is to ensure they are well fed. A baby with a full tummy tends to be more relaxed and sleeps better. This need for the baby to be fed makes the newborn session longer, as it requires more breaks to ensure that the baby is fed and calm.
Keep the environment warm
Newborns are accustomed to the warmth and comfort of the womb, so it is important to recreate a warm and welcoming environment. For this reason, it is ideal to keep the space at a comfortable temperature for the baby throughout the session. Using portable heaters or fireplaces can be a good option to ensure that the baby is kept comfortable on cold days.
Use of calming sounds
The sound of the mother’s heartbeat or soft noises, such as the sound of the womb, can be incredibly calming for the baby. White noise and instrumental music also work very well. We use this technique throughout our session to create a welcoming environment for the baby and the family.
Gentle touch and patience
Touch is a powerful tool for calming your baby. A gentle stroke on the back or tummy can help your baby feel safe. Some babies also like to feel gently “squeezed,” which can be achieved by swaddling. It’s important to remember that newborn sessions require a lot of patience – sometimes, you must take short breaks to calm your baby or help them fall back to sleep. One of our special tricks is a little “massage” on the upper part of the face, which can often calm even the most anxious baby.
Quieter times
Babies have their rhythms, and it is essential to schedule the session when the baby tends to be calmer. This usually means early morning, so we discuss the best times to fit into the baby's routine in advance.
Relaxed parents, relaxed baby
Babies are susceptible to the emotions around them. If parents are nervous or anxious, their baby may feel that tension. It is, therefore, important for parents to feel calm and confident during the session. A relaxed, relaxed and trusting environment is essential for the baby to feel safe, too.
Pay attention to your baby's signs
Every baby is unique, and paying attention to its signals is essential. If your baby starts to show signs of discomfort, such as crying or excessive movement, it is necessary to take a break. You may need to hold your baby, rock him gently, feed him, or change his diaper. The important thing is to respect your baby's rhythm and not force him into poses that may make him uncomfortable.
