A simple guide to looking your best — and feeling comfortable too
Choosing what to wear for your outdoor session can feel overwhelming — but it doesn’t have to be. The right clothing not only helps you feel confident, but also brings harmony to your photos. Here's how to find the perfect look for your family photoshoot in nature.
1. Dress for the season
The seasons in Ireland are mild but unique, and choosing the right colors and textures for each time of year will make your photos even more beautiful.
Spring
Nature is in full bloom with soft greens, flowers and longer days. Light layers, soft pastels and florals work perfectly. Think baby blue, pale pink, ivory and sage green.
Summer
Golden light, lush landscapes and mild temperatures. Flowy dresses, linen shirts and bare feet create calming images. Earthy tones, whites, warm neutrals and soft blues are perfect.
Autumn
Rich hues like rust, burgundy, mustard, forest green and burnt orange pair perfectly with the golden hues of nature. Add texture with knits, scarves, and boots.
Winter
Leafless trees and gloomy skies create a sense of intimacy. Go for deeper hues—wine, navy, charcoal, camel—and cozy layers. Wool coats, sweaters, and understated accessories keep the style elevated.
2. Start with soft, natural tones
Nature gives us the perfect backdrop — greens, browns, golden light — so it’s best to wear colours that complement the environment.
Soft neutrals, earthy tones, and pastels photograph beautifully outdoors.
Examples: cream, beige, olive green, muted pink, rust, soft blue, terracotta.
3. Think texture and layers
Textures like linen, cotton, denim or knits add depth and interest to photos.
Layering is also a great way to adapt to Ireland’s unpredictable weather and add movement to the images.
For example: a flowy cardigan, a scarf, or a wool jumper tied over the shoulders
4. Dress for the location
Ireland has stunning outdoor locations — from open parks to lakeside spots and gardens. If you’re shooting in a forest, field, or castle garden, choose comfortable shoes and outfits that allow you to move freely, especially with children.
5. Comfort first (especially for kids)
A happy child makes for beautiful photos. Choose clothes that are soft, comfortable and allow for play. Avoid anything too tight or itchy. Sometimes, a barefoot moment can feel more natural and relaxed!
6. Accessories
Hats, hairbands, or delicate jewellery can add personality, but try to keep it simple to avoid distractions. Natural hairstyles work wonderfully and allow the wind to play its magic.
